1.    What is Present Progressive Tense?

Present Progressive Tense adalah tense yang digunakan untuk menceritakan atau mendeskripsikan kejadian atau aktivitas yang terjadi sekarang atau saat ini.

Contoh kalimat:

a.     They are fixing the bikes. (Mereka sedang memperbaiki sepeda-sepeda).

b.    My sister is planting the flower. (Adikku sedang menanam bunga).

c.     They are listening to the radio. (Mereka sedang mendengarkan siaran radio).

 

2.    Struktur Kalimat

Adapun struktur kalimat Bahasa Inggris yang menggunakan Present Progressive Tense adalah sebagai berikut

 

§  Kalimat Positive (Positive Sentence)

a.     They are baking the cake.

b.    The teacher is grading the homework.

c.     I am wiping the table right now.

(Subject + to be (is/am/are) + V-ing)

Catatan: Penggunaan to be tergantung terhadap subjek sebuah kalimat.

ü “Is” digunakan untuk subjek tunggal (singular subject) seperti he, she, it dan kata benda tunggal (singular noun) seperti  a book, a cat, a house, Andi, Dina dan lain-lainnya.

ü “Are” digunakan untuk subjek plural (plural subject) seperti, you, they, we, dan kata benda jamak (plural noun) seperti books, cats, houses, Andi and Dina, dan lain-lainnya.

ü “Am” digunakan untuk “I”.

 

§  Kalimat Negative (Negative Sentence)

a.     They are not (aren’t) baking the cake.

b.    The teacher is not (isn’t) grading the homework.

c.     I am not wiping the table right now.

(Subject + to be (is/am/are) + not + V-ing)

 

§  Kalimat Pertanyaan (Interrogative Sentence)

d.    Are they baking the cake?

e.     Is the teacher grading the homework?

f.      Am I wiping the table right now?

(To be (is/am/are) + subject + V-ing)

 

3.    Latihan

Berikut adalah contoh soal grammar Present Progressive Tense yang dapat teman-teman gunakan sebagai bahan ajar atau latihan.

 

1.    Sarah ________________ (read) a book in the park.

2.    We ________________ (play) soccer in the backyard.

3.    They ________________ (study) for their exams at the library.

4.    I ________________ (cook) dinner for my family.

5.    The dog ________________ (chase) its tail in circles.

6.    He ________________ (work) on a project for his job.

7.    She ________________ (dance) at the dance studio.

8.    The children ________________ (laugh) and play in the playground.

9.    We ________________ (wait) for the bus at the bus stop.

10. The rain ________________ (fall) heavily outside.

 

Kunci Jawaban:

1.    Sarah is reading a book in the park.

2.    We are playing soccer in the backyard.

3.    They are studying for their exams at the library.

4.    I am cooking dinner for my family.

5.    The dog is chasing its tail in circles.

6.    He is working on a project for his job.

7.    She is dancing at the dance studio.

8.    The children are laughing and playing in the playground.

9.    We are waiting for the bus at the bus stop.

10. The rain is falling heavily outside.
