The Origin of “Guel” Dance || Aceh Folklore (Part I)

Once there lived two brothers namely Muria and Seganda. Every day those two brothers were always asked by their parents to herd ducks in the shore of the sea. While herding the duck, to relieve their boredom, they usually flew their kites.  One day, while they were flying their kite, a strong wind was coming and mad their kites thread break. Knowing that their kites thread break, those brothers ran and tried to catch their kites. They forgot about their ducks and left them without any guidance.

Because of their negligence by leaving the ducks without any guidance, the duck eventually swam onto the sea, and lost. After getting tired running after the kites, those brothers was back to the place where they herded their ducks. As they reached the place, they found that their duck had already gone onto the sea. With a feeling of fear, those brothers were heading home. As they were home, they told their parents about what had happened in the shore of the sea.
 
After knowing what happened to their boys and the ducks, the father became furious and asked the boys to find the ducks no matter what happened. They cannot return back home unless they came with the ducks. Finally they left the home to find the lost ducks. They sailed the sea with a small boat. Days after days passed, they found nothing in the sea while they were already sailing further and they had no idea where they were. They were lost.  And after several days, their boats reached an island that is later known as Surale.


What happened to them at Surale island. Were they able to survive their lives at the island they had never been there before? Did they find their lost ducks?
