Once upon a time, in a place called Teluk Dalam, North Sumatra, there lived a king named Raja Simangolong. The king lived with his beautiful wife and their beautiful daughter, Sri Pandan. Sri Pandan was a strikingly beautiful girl. Not only was she beautiful, but she also had pleasant manners. She liked to help other people even though she was a princess. Everyone liked her, and they were really grateful to have such an adorable princess.
The beauty of Sri Pandan was well known in the kingdoms. As a father and a king, Raja Simangolong really hoped that his daughter would marry a prince from a neighboring kingdom. He wanted the marriage to bring the two kingdoms even closer together.
One day, a royal party from the Kingdom of Aceh came to the palace. The party consisted of the king, the prince, and some important people from the kingdom. When they arrived, the King of Aceh explained the purpose of their visit. He conveyed the prince's wish to take the princess as his wife.
Raja Simangolong was really happy to hear that a prince wanted to marry his daughter. But he did not want to rush things. He answered the King of Aceh's request, "I need to talk about this with my daughter. I will let her answer the prince's herself. We need some time. I promise I will let you and the prince know as soon as my daughter gives her answer."
After that, the King of Aceh, the prince and their people went back to their kingdom. No sooner had they left the palace than the king asked the princess about the proposal from the prince of Aceh. Raja Simangolong told her how happy he was to receive a proposal from the neighboring kingdom, and he expected his daughter to feel the same way.
But the princess didn't say anything about the proposal. Instead, she bent her head down and cried. The king was confused to see his daughter crying over such happy news.
"Why are you crying, my daughter?" asked the king.
Sri Pandan didn't answer the king's question. Sobbing in despair, she buried her face in her palms.
"Just answer my question, my daughter," said her father, hoping to hear that his daughter accepted the proposal.
"Have mercy on me, Father," said Sri Pandan between her sobs. "I cannot accept the proposal. It's not because I don't want to be a good daughter to you. But…" Sri Pandan's voice trailed off.
"But what?" asked the king curiously.
"But I have fallen in love with someone, and I have promised to marry him."
"Who is he?"
"Hobatan, Father."
"What?" Now there was anger in the king's voice. "Do you mean Hobatan, our ? Have you lost your mind, my daughter? You are rejecting the prince of Aceh just to be with our servant?"
The princess nodded slowly. She bent her head down, not wanting to see her father's furious face.
"Forget about Hobatan this instant!" said the king loudly. "Accept the prince's proposal, or else you must leave the kingdom, and I will you!" Then he left the princess alone.
The princess cried louder and louder. Then she left her room to look for Hobatan. When she found him, she told him what had happened between her and the king. Sri Pandan asked Hobatan to marry her and take her away from the kingdom. She told him she would do whatever it took to live with him.
But when Hobatan had heard what the princess said, he told her to the king's order. He told Sri Pandan to accept the prince's proposal. So disappointed was the princess that she Hobatan, saying that she would harm herself if she had to marry someone she didn't love.
"I would jump into the lubuk if I had to marry him," said Sri Pandan. (A lubuk is the deepest part of a river.)
"Don't be silly! I know you are just threatening me, my princess. Now please go home and do what your father has asked you to do. I don't want to get into trouble."
The princess was very by her lover's answer. She had never imagined that Hobatan would not fight for their love. She went to her room and packed all her gold and some clothes. Then, in the middle of the night, she out to the river, carrying her gold and clothes wrapped in a fine cloth.
When she reached the lubuk, she stood in silence, thinking about what had just happened to her. Tears dripped from her eyes. "There will be no more beautiful girl in this kingdom," said the princess, before she jumped into the lubuk and disappeared.
The next morning, everyone in the palace was alarmed by the princess's . The king suddenly remembered Hobatan and ordered his soldiers to bring Hobatan to him. When Hobatan stood in front of him, the king asked him about his daughter.
Hobatan told the king what he and the princess had talked and argued about the night before. He also told the king about her threat to jump into the lubuk. When he heard this, the king rushed to the river with his soldiers. But when they reached the river, they found nothing but a piece of cloth floating on the water.
The king asked his soldiers to take the cloth. When he held it, he realized that it belonged to his daughter. The king could not help crying, what he had done to her. If only he hadn't forced his daughter to accept the prince's proposal, she would still be alive now.
Since then, because the princess took her gold with her when she jumped into the lubuk, people have called the place "Lubuk Emas." Emas means gold.
